Code of Conduct

The Belitz Global Change Entomology Lab operates within the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Entomology’s Code of Conduct & Guidelines for Graduate Students and Advisors. That department-wide document describes our shared values on inclusion, integrity, honesty, collaboration, community, and respect. Further, it defines unacceptable behaviors (discrimination, harassment, retaliation, academic misconduct, and more), sets expectations for advisor and student mentoring, work hours, leave, and funding, and lists the campus offices available for reporting and support. The Department’s Code of Conduct applies to everyone in the lab. If you experience or witness behavior inconsistent with the department code of conduct, please use the reporting channels it describes, or speak with Michael directly.

In this lab, we additionally aim to:

• Discuss authorship expectations, lab policies, and advising style with every prospective student or postdoc before they join.
• Give credit generously and communicate openly about authorship and contributions throughout a project, not just at submission.
• Engage in constructive, evidence-based scientific discussion and welcome disagreement conducted respectfully.
• Support collaboration as a better model than competition within the lab and with colleagues at UW–Madison and elsewhere.
• Advocate for Open Science and reproducibility. While there are many reasons for not sharing data openly immediately, the data and software we generate is released under open licenses whenever possible. We view this as an important contribution to the scientific community.
